Muralist muhammad yungai (@artofyungai ) has depicted dr. martin luther king jr. in three murals across atlanta, georgia. “just seeing his face is a prompt to have courage in the face of adversity,” muhammad says.
a former art teacher, muhammad believes that having depictions of dr. king in schools is especially important. “i want children to feel empowered,” he adds. “each painting, sculpture or photo of him is a reminder of who we all can be, and what we can achieve together.” spend #mlkday celebrating atlanta’s civil rights legacy with a tour of its inspiring murals, today on our story.

For the past five years, artist parth kothekar (@parthkothekar ) has hand-carved creations, each from a single sheet of paper. it takes him about three weeks to sketch 20 to 30 designs. then, parth, 27, selects his 10 favorite ones and starts cutting away. each papercut can take up to an entire week to complete, down to the last detail.
although parth’s intricate masterpieces might seem frail, the women they depict are anything but. “i was brought up seeing the struggle of my mother,” he says. “that’s why i always create female characters. i wanted to show them as powerful and strong through my artwork.” see how these intricate papercuts are made, today on our story.

weekend hashtag project: #whpwanderlust this weekend the challenge is to capture an epic travel moment. your inspiration is this featured photo by landscape photographer rach stewart (@rachstewartnz ). here are some tips to get started:
spend time outside. from a snowy forest hours from home to a flower bed in your own backyard, nature’s beauty is all around us. think about how light or the time of day might help you capture mother nature in her glory.
escape from the day-to-day. pitch a tent under the stars, find a cabin in the woods or take a trip to the sea. if you make new friends (fluffy or otherwise) include them in the photo or video that you share.
make memories along the way. it’s not always about the destination. make sure to take photos of the journey to get there, especially if the journey involves road trips, scenic bike rides or hikes with a killer view.
project rules: please add the #whpwanderlust hashtag only to photos and videos shared over this weekend and only submit your own visuals to the project. by adding the #whpwanderlust hashtag, you consent to and grant instagram all rights to repost your photo or video. if you include music in your video submissions, please only use music to which you own the rights. any tagged photo or video shared over the weekend with the #whpwanderlust hashtag is eligible for the project and, if selected, to be featured next week.

for 23-year-old photographer yannis davy guibinga (@yannisdavy ), the colors green, yellow and blue take him back to where he grew up: libreville, gabon. through his lens, the colors of africa and its diaspora shine.
“the affinity for strong colors is tied to my desire to re-create the colors i remember seeing growing up in gabon,” says yannis, who was born in france, then grew up in gabon before moving to montréal, canada, where he resides now. “i am greatly inspired by the diversity of african cultures and identities, both on the continent and its diaspora.”

graphic designer patty maher (@pattymaher ) created a photo collage where a self-portrait taken in her front yard in caledon, ontario, was transported to another time – more specifically, summer in the 1960s. “this photo was definitely inspired by summer, which i am missing in the middle of winter,” patty says. “plus, polka dots.” #whpinspiredby

when the weather is gloomy, go indoors to find some color. that’s what living in oslo, norway, has taught writer kim andré olsen (@kimothyolsen ). “these dark january days in norway make me yearn for more colors and for springtime,” kim says. to combat the winter blues, he drew inspiration from carmen miranda, a star known for wearing fruit on her head, and william tell, who, according to folklore, shot an arrow through an apple on his son’s head. 😬 #whpinspiredby
