One thing i ask from the lord, this only do i seek: that i may dwell in the house of the lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the lord and to seek him in his temple. - psalm 27:4

The story of job is one of unprecedented suffering and loss. but it’s also a story of faithfulness. not only of job’s in his unwillingness to forsake god despite his circumstances, but also of god’s story and his unending pursuit of us. ⠀
in job’s desperation, he found god to be more faithful than he had ever been. though everything in his life was stripped away, god remained steadfast. and as job continued to suffer, he saw the character of god revealed more and more.⠀
as the days went by, job saw less and less of his struggle and more of god‘s goodness. and god’s goodness was enough to get him through.⠀
we all face trials of many kinds. the question is not why we went through it, but who did we meet when we were there. we can turn to our own bitterness or we can lean in on the mercy and kindness of god.⠀
2 corinthians 4:16–18 (esv): “so we do not lose heart. though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. for this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. for the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”⠀

Matthew 7:3. so many of us christians are guilty of having a log in our own eye. jesus says "why worry about speck in your friend's eye when you have a log in your own" after commanding us to not judge others and before addressing his audience as hypocrites. what can we learn from jesus here? first, we should not judge others for sins and mistakes in their lives because we have our own sins and mistakes. we are quick to judge others for what we believe they are doing wrong, but we have no right to judge because only god has the knowledge and right to judge others. second, we should avoid being hypocrites by worrying about our own sins and becoming right with god before worrying about what others are doing. instead of pointing out the faults in others and ignoring our own, we need to ask god to help us get the log out of our own eye by repenting. if we point out sin in someone else's life without being willing to address and deal with our own sins, we are hypocrites. third, the words "speck" and "log" give us a lesson on comparing sins. often, when we are struggling with admitting our sins, we excuse or minimize them by comparing them to someone else's sins, usually someone we believe has sinned worse than us. "well i may have done this, but at least i didn't do what he did." the truth is that we point out even the smallest sin in others while ignoring much bigger sins in our own lives. while we are focused on the speck in someone else's eye, we are blind to the much bigger log in our own eye. when we stop comparing our sins to others, we can become more focused on removing logs from our eyes through repentance. do not judge others, do not be a hypocrite, and try to refrain from comparing sins.
Early on sunday morning, as the new day was dawning, mary magdalene and the other mary went out to visit the tomb.
2 suddenly there was a great earthquake! for an angel of the lord came down from heaven, rolled aside the stone, and sat on it. 3 his face shone like lightning, and his clothing was as white as snow. 4 the guards shook with fear when they saw him, and they fell into a dead faint.
5 then the angel spoke to the women. “don’t be afraid!” he said. “i know you are looking for jesus, who was crucified. 6 he isn’t here! he is risen from the dead, just as he said would happen. come, see where his body was lying. 7 and now, go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and he is going ahead of you to galilee. you will see him there. remember what i have told you.” -matthew 28:1-7 nlt
