Yearly reflections // i cannot encourage staycations, weekend get-aways enough! i’ll go as far to say you depend on them in order to thrive!

over the weekend i took a girls trip to palm springs. the vibe there is much slower leaving me with time to reflect on this year and return feeling realigned with what i want more of in the upcoming new year + what i can do without. 👋🏼 i made a list of 10 things i accomplished this year. i’m the type of person who is always on to the next thing so its important i slow down and enjoy the process of it all. creating my list, i realized how much i truly did accomplish, witness, experience, and grow from this year. it felt nice to sit with this before i rush into all the exciting new things i’ll be working towards in the new year(i’m always gonna me after all, lol)

i challenge you to stop what you’re doing, take a few moments to create a list of 10 things you did this year that you can be proud of.

re-read the list, take it all in, sit with it, give yourself acknowledgement! you deserve it.

what are you most proud of? let me know in the comments, i live for this!

I didn’t know how to begin this story, so i am just going to dive into it. it’s a story i am sure many of you are familiar with. when i was 17 i was diagnosed with secondary amenorrhea and since then my periods have never been regular. they guessed at other diagnoses also like pcos, even hashimoto’s, but different tests told me different things. they put me on the pill to “fix” me and back then i didn’t know what a bad solution that was. i have been on the pill and off the pill and on again because the side effects that come along with being off it are so awful for me: i didn’t get my period, i lost my hair, i broke out, the list goes on. i was scared to share this because it seemed too personal or maybe it wouldn’t matter to some people, but i know now there are so many of you that share these problems with me. but this 2019 things are changing. it is my one and only goal to fix my amenorrhea and bring my period back, and i will share everything i do so that if there is even one of you that benefits from it i will know i helped in some way ❤️ i’m happy to have you with me on this journey through the highs and the lows.

Ain't that true!? 😂😂⠀

when it comes to improving digestive health, it's not just about what you're putting in your body, but also about what you're doing with your body. there is nothing worse for digestion than sitting down to big (albeit healthy) meals, then staying seated at your desk for hours on end. unfortunately, for many of us (e.g., students, office workers etc ... we really have no other option). that's why for me, yoga has been my lifesaver. 🙏👌 ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
it has helped both my mental and my physical health tremendously and forced me to learn and regularly practice mind-body awareness, which is something i had previously actively avoided. i was upset and angry with my body for “betraying” me with uncomfortable and painful symptoms. i was also too embarrassed to go to a yoga class, despite having been a practitioner for years, as i would have to stop to go to the toilet every two minutes and didn’t want to distract the other students. there’s nothing worse than being the culprit behind a noisy stomach when everyone is sitting in silent meditation. 🙊 ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
however, the skills i have learnt with regards to listening to my body has helped me along my health journey. i can now more accurately identify my “trigger” foods, as i am more in tune with my b****y sensations. i have also come to have a newfound appreciation for my body, for all the amazing ways it can twist, turn, go upside down … we really are blessed to have such amazing machinery to work with. 😱⠀⠀
⠀⠀
yoga is like having a good singing voice, in that you take it with you wherever you go. there's nothing stopping you from pulling out some stretches before going back to your chair. even on holidays i’m known to take up room in the boot with my yoga mat. if you are too embarrassed to attend a class, or prefer privacy when exercising, then visit www.thefodmapfriendlyvegan.com > resources where i take you through simple yoga postures can be performed in the privacy of your own home, any time of day or night. 🌙💜😘⠀

Happy #smallfactfriday! nightshades are family of plants, some that we eat. some people’s bodies can’t handle nightshades, can eating them can cause signs and symptoms like bloating, gas, diarrhea, joint pain, fatigue, gut inflammation and nausea.
.
common nightshades include tomatoes, tomatillos, eggplant, potatoes and all peppers (bells, paprika, jalapenos, etc).
.
an elimination diet, like the autoimmune protocol, can help you figure out if nightshades are something you might need to lessen or remove from your diet, either until more gut healing happens or permanently.

In past years, by now i’d be prepping to make 100+ tamales, sending out 100+ christmas cards, and hanging 100+ ornaments. this year, in the spirit of keeping things simple, maybe we will just get a small potted tree, or maybe not. my christmas spirit is there, just redirected to the gift of time. 💚❤️~

Supper tonight? golden pillowy potato gnocchi with fried sage leaves and crispy prosciutto topped with parmesan shavings (and grated parmesan on the side, just in case). a flavour bomb of complete deliciousness. gnocchi is a cinch to make, and the recipe will be up on www.desertislanddishes.co - subscribe so you are the first to know, but also you can buy v good gnocchi so this could be on your table in no tome at all. i always tend to boil it and then pan fry it to get it nice and crispy on the outside but it stays lovely and fluffy in the middle. gnocchi was the first dish gino d’acampo learnt to cook, so i’ve made this as the desert island dish of the week. supper sorted?
