#algeria #algiers dear friends, many of you have been asking about my books. i would like to share for the next weeks the covers of all of them in different languages and their story. for the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the independence of algeria. yasmina khadra has always been passionately interested in anything to do with his country of origin and has, what’s more, given voice to this passion through his many articles and novels treating all threats and dangers with scorn. in this work, yasmina khadra, the algerian who writes in french, delivers onto the page a true declaration of love for his country. from constantine in the great south, taking in oran, algiers, tizi, ouzou, rio salado and zahara, yasmina khadra holds out his hand and takes us to discover his algeria. as with the impressionists, between autobiographical narrative and a poetic fable, the text he offers is of rare intensity. my photographs are portraying his memories through photography and revealing a country where he still hopes for greater freedom and more tolerance. with each destination and encounter we try to sublimate an algeria preparing to celebrate its fifty years of independence. “algeria has always been plural with its algerian-born french, algerians, french, spanish, greek, jews, berbers, tuaregs… it is when we try to reduce it to one single identity that it disintegrates” available in french. to order to michel lafon publishing: www.michel-lafon.fr/livre/1126-impressions_d_algerie.html #children #algerian #littlegirl #street #innocence #childhood #book #cover #yasminakhadra #writer #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #رضادقتى #عكاس @thephotosociety

Black january #azerbaijan, 1990 one of the world’s greatest armies had surrendered after ten years of fighting the afghan warlords in the mountains. the dismantling of the eastern bloc had begun — a process symbolized by the first chunk of concrete torn down from the berlin wall. in azerbaijan, a country under russian control since the 19th century, political unrest grew into a revolt against the kremlin. to punish this audacity, russian tanks entered the capital city of baku on the night between january 19 and 20, 1990, firing machine guns. the massacre left hundreds of dead and wounded. the city was closed to journalists. but i managed to get there by taking a train from moscow, keeping myself concealed during the 48-hour trip. i was able to provide a visual testimony of the russians’ violent suppression of this uprising. i took some of the photographs through the windows of unmarked police cars. later, the national flower was no longer used to represent the country, but rather that bloody night. red carnations are now only used at funerals and laid on graves to remember those who died during the struggle for independence. ephemeral remains of a painful past, the flowers on the ground invite the people to make peace with their own history, to finally reach liberty. text written by rachel deghati. #blackjanuary #massacre #civil #innocent #testimony #witness #flower #red #carnation #pigeon #bird #aztagram #picoftheday #igers #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #رضادقتى عكاس @thephotosociety

#turkmenistan #cheleken dear friends, many of you have been asking about my books. i would like to share for the next weeks the covers of all of them in different languages and their story. from venice to the depths of china, the silkroads remain nothing more but a mythical axis; a primary route which the orient and the occident have exchanged goods and ideas for centuries. today, the essence of this road persists in oases and caravansaries, in towns spread across old europe and the depths of asia. this sense of hospitality, harmony, the exchange between men and openness towards one another can be found in the land, heritage, and treasures hidden along the roads of trade and invention from istanbul to xi’an, from konya to samarkand, from baku to bamyan, where destroyed buddhas still appear to breathe from their own wisdom. there are countless messages of tolerance, as well as a sanctuary of ideas. during these troubled times of wounded civilizations, on the silkroads – the anti-route of crusades – revokes, on the contrary, for reconciliation. this route is also bringing us back to our origins and to a nostalgic nomadism. on the silkroads, a blend between the past and present, is a plunge into mysticism and at the same time an invitation into my journey. text by olivier weber. available in french. to order: [email protected] #grace #caspiansea #actress #actor #book #cover #rehearsal #poetry #tale #theatre #lyricism #harmonious #tradition #turkmen #caspian #folklore #jewelry #dance #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #رضادقتى# عكاس @thephotosociety

Black gold’s blood. #russia for hours on end, babushkas stand on street corners hoping for a handout. even after waiting for hours, these old russian grandmothers may not get any money. in their younger days, they fervently sang the praises of communism. in russia, how many people were there who, in their youth, were enthusiastically committed to the soviet cause and tried to impose its ideals on faraway countries — from the chinese border to the mountains of tajikistan, from the central asian steppes to the banks of the caspian sea, from the baltic coast to the ice deserts of siberia? after the collapse of the u.s.s.r., and the independence of those former soviet provinces. the newly emerging countries, as well as russia, have shifted to a market economy, developing a capitalism. i saw him in the town of khabarovsk while on assignment for national geographic, a poor pensioner living on the streets, he staggered and looked lost. his clothes had become rags. when i asked his name, he began to weep. he said no one had asked his name in ten years. his name was gennady vaslyevich. through his half-open shirt, i glimpsed the portraits of marx, engels, lenin, and stalin, symbols of a bygone ideology. he had the tattoo done while he was a soldier. he did not know what i had learned: in siberia, prisoners in the gulags had those four faces tattooed on their chests to avoid the firing squad. what soviet soldier would have dared shoot at his heroes. after the fall of socialism, and with the subsequent revival of the right to express religious feeling, vaslyevich had added a new icon to protect him, a cross. text written by rachel deghati. published in "war + peace" (national geographic publishing, 2007), "reza, entre guerre et paix" (national geographic publishing, 2008). #man #tatoo #oldrussian #russian #khabarovsk #poor #poverty #portrait #hardtime #symbol #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati#rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #رضادقتى#عكاس@thephotosociety

Movement #france i have always been a great reader of poetry. i was raised in the persian culture which is profoundly marked by great poets like saadi, hafez and rumi, to cite only a few among so many, both from centuries past, as well as contemporaries. they are the very breath of persian culture and society. reading poetry has enabled me to maintain a link with my identity throughout my life, but it has also helped sustain me through many dark hours in my time as a witness of man’s inhumanity to man. the sufi poet rumi evokes the state of trance. i wanted to create an image of this form of osmosis between thought, beauty and the body – all this is translated into the freedom and grace of movement. the iranian sufi dancer shahrokh meskhin is a master of this type of transcendence. text written by rachel deghati. published in "l'envol, la conférence des oiseaux" (democratic books publishing, 2001).#dance #dancer #danceislife #poetry #rumi #rumilove #movement #shahrokhmeshkinghalam #iranian_gram #picoftheday #igers #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #رضادقتى عكاس @thephotosociety

Photo by @rezaphotography wedding and power #pakistan, #karachi at the clifton palace garden in karachi, pakistan, benazir bhutto and asif zardari had an almost traditional pakistani wedding. portrait of a pretty young girl participating to the wedding. benazir broke with tradition by trying to keep their wedding simple. she eliminated the dowry, had only two shalwar kameez instead of the traditional nearly 51 dresses and wore only one layer of jewelry. benazir wore a white silk tunic with gold-embroidery. asif wore a turban and a cream-colored tunic. asif and benazir and their families had several days of celebration. the couple said "yes" three times, and at their wedding ceremony benazir and asif looked into a mirror together so they could see themselves as a married couple for the first time. sugar was ground over their heads so their lives would be sweet. in the streets after their wedding there were 100,000 political supporters dancing, singing, firing guns in the air, and enjoying fireworks. then, the power, the wedding with asif, took benazir on a different road that she didn't want at the begining. text written by rachel deghati. published in reporters without borders (2008). #benazirbhutto #wedding #celebration #love #union #asifzardari #girl #traditional #portrait #beauty #beautiful #look #pakistanese #grace #picoftheday #igers#photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #رضادقتى #عكاس @thephotosociety #amazingculture

Regram @rezaphotography #pakistan, #balochistan i was fortunate to have been able to discover the arid region of balochistan in pakistan while working on assignment for national geographic. in this region, it is not only the children who suffer from the lack of educational institutions, but the entire population who have been abandoned by the ruling powers. the money from the pipeline that wends its way past their miserable habitations goes right into the pockets of the “lords of the punjab,” thus dubbed by the venerable baloch chief, akbar bugti. bugti was a former minister and member of parliament who was assassinated when he tried to fight for balochi rights. in that region, the poorest of the poor are undoubtedly the nomadic tribes, who constantly wander the barren mountains, like this young nomad girl. text written by rachel deghati. published in "l'envol, la conférence des oiseaux" (democratic books publishing, 2001).#portrait #girl #akbarbugti #pakistanese #sadness #balochiculture #balochigirls #picoftheday #igers #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #رضادقتى عكاس @thephotosociety

National geographic fotoğrafçılarından @rezaphotography çektiği fotoğrafın hikayesini anlatıyor: yeryüzü korkunç bir şekilde sarsıldı, toprak yarıldı ve her şeyi yuttu...binlerce can verildi. bir yaz gecesiydi. ben de türkiye'deydim. sismologların "anadolu fayı" adını verdikleri hat üzerinde haftalarca çalıştım. geçmişte de bir deprem sonrası avrupa ve asya arasındaki kırılmayla oluşan boğaz, toprak titremesinin neden olduğu seller nedeniyle küçük bir göle dönüşerek #karadeniz’i oluşturmuştu. nuh efsanesinin de bu olayla ilgili olduğuna inanılır. metin: rachel deghati #sea #anatolian #bosphorus #turkish #earthquake #earth #blacksea #nature #naturelover #naturaldisaster#picoftheday #igers#photooftheday #photojournalism #reza#rezaphoto #rezadeghati#rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan @thephotosociety
