I have more dreams #usa, #washington, martin luther king, jr. national memorial in washington dc, the day is breaking. on this holiday which commemorates the rev. martin luther king, i am on my way to another peace march. the chill in the air brings to mind all the refugee families who are also marching, trying to survive the cold amidst the european forests and “jungles.” after having passed many hours over many days with king’s acolytes, i perceive a great foreboding in each of their faces, reminiscent of that of former prisoners whose memories are haunted by the tortures they have suffered. each of them fears that their work consists of eternally starting over, that the threat hanging over them will return over and over again, for them and their descendants. this sense of a vague apprehension that i know so well strikes me from my very first meeting with the followers of martin luther king, gathered around the washington monument. at the end of a march that lasted several hours in a cold, melancholy ambiance bereft of joy... i did see tears, those of a stone statue, a dreamer, whose gaze has been fixed for eternity, and who seemed to share the sorrow of the moment. i thought of the tears of another statue that i had frozen in an instant, at the père lachaise cemetery, when the iranian community of refugees and exiles in paris encountered death for the first time when they buried their friend, the writer and thinker, sa'adi. here and there, we continue to dream for more humanity, justice and freedom, ideals that need defending now more than ever. #martinlutherking #martinlutherkingday #martinlutherkingjrday #martinlutherkingmemorial #martinlutherkingmarch #tear #portrait #statue #fight #fightforrights #freedom #equality #american #emotion #picoftheday #igers #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #رضادقتى #عكاس @thephotosociety

Fragile ice the amur river, #russia here i am on assignment for national geographic on the banks of the amur river, the natural border stretching three kilometers wide which separates two giants: china and russia. i had just passed part of the winter in this region, moving from one bank to another. the cold froze my mustache, and my film. working in minus 40 °c is a real challenge! the harbingers of spring are thus very welcome. the thaw has begun and people come out to enjoy it. v***a and picnics on the as yet non-existent grass are de rigueur. a festive ambiance prevails. voices, laughter, and the singing of popular songs blend with the sound of colliding ice floes coasting along and clashing. two young girls sporting mini skirts brave the cold. since youth is by definition carefree, they leap from floe to floe, catching each other by the hand at the last minute. i watch them from the bank, as close to the edge as possible, in order to capture this fragile balancing act. text written by rachel deghati. published in "derrière l'objectif" (hoëbeke publishing, 2010) and reporters without borders ( 2008). #amur #river #ice #amurriver #nature #fragile #spring #cold #frozen #joy #happiness #girl #brave #sportive #picoftheday #igers #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #رضادقتى عكاس @thephotosociety

Follow @rezaphotography regram @rezaphotography #france, #paris, père lachaise cemetery tears from one statue to another, from one battle to another, the same tears flow over the hopes of our humanity. condemned to exile, i left iran for france on march 25, 1981. for a long time, i thought my time away would be of short duration, just a brief deviation on my path, a pause until the fall of the mullahs. almost thirty years later, i live my life fully in the present. each country i find myself in is my own. at the cemetery of père lachaise, on a rainy somber day in november 1984, i began to realize that this pleasant “deviation” in the legendary west was taking on a rather definitive cast. at the time, i was a war correspondent, and i enjoyed a certain solitude in france. we were burying an iranian friend, a thinker and writer. we felt the bitter taste of death in exile, imagining our lifeless bodies interred in a soil which was not our own. it was raining and the congregation were all ensconced under umbrellas. i sought a position above them in order to show the vast number of people present. suddenly, within my viewfinder, i perceived the quasi-human face of this statue which seemed to be weeping. its gaze, directed right at me, seemed to reflect my own sadness. text written by rachel deghati. #tear #portrait #statue #cemetery #perelachaise #blackandwhitephotography #sadness #emotion #picoftheday #igers #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #رضادقتى#عكاس @thephotosociety

#repost @rezaphotography with @repostapp ・・・ ancient coptic christmas #egypt, #cairo over decades, i did few assignments in egypt for national geographic magazine. at saint mark’s cathedral in cairo, i took part in the celebration of coptic orthodox christians christmas, and met with representatives of the community. amongst swirling smoke and incense, the coptic orthodox christian community of egypt celebrates christmas with prayers and chants that have remained unchanged for almost 2,000 years. the copts, a devout christian community from egypt, are considered by some scholars the oldest unchanged egyptian community. here, the pope shenuda iii of alexandria 117th pope and patriarch of st mark's was celebrating the coptic christmas which usually is celebrated between 6 and 7 of january. #copt #orthodox #christian #religion #celebration #copticchristmas #copticorthodox #copticpope #christmas #fervor #pray #prayers #cathedral #tradition #devotion #picoftheday #igers #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #عكاس

Pc - @rezaphotography regram @rezaphotography inspiration from childhood #china, #xinjiang (#easternturkestan) i was on assignment for national geographic on xinjiang. in childhood, the experience of reading has an incomparable flavor. for a young reader, words and stories about faraway places are not just a simple invitation to travel, but a call to a horizon freighted with mysteries. reading about such enthralling locations often then inspires a child to make a secret pact: to go visit these places someday, so that these words, these places are no longer merely black ink on a white page, but become a lived and felt reality. some texts seem to evoke a bygone era, conjuring up a world that now belongs to history. i am thinking, for instance, of the writings of ancient travelers or of the poems of sa’adi. likewise, as i discovered east turkestan, while on assignment for the national geographic magazine, i had the impression of being immersed in the books from my childhood and of traveling through time. karakol lake is on the road that separates the city of kashgar from the tall peaks of the pamir mountain range. karakoll means “black lake” in uygur. a caravan of travelers had stopped for a moment near the icy lake. glaciers towered nearby. the pamirs include a hundred glaciers. muztagata, parallel to the edge of the pamirs and known as the “father of ice mountains,” reaches 24,757 feet. text written by rachel deghati. published in "war + peace" (national geographic publishing, 2007), "reza, entre guerre et paix" (national geographic publishing, 2008) #snowmountain #muztagata #woman #lake #red #reddress #mountain #alone #turkestan #uygur #picoftheday #igers #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #رضادقتى عكاس @thephotosociety

Photographer @rezaphotography posted this picture of himself and federica #mogherini. here is the story behind the picture: #brussel #europeancommission exile voices when i met the syrian refugee children in kurdistan iraq who later became students of reza visual academy, which has been training them in photography since 2013, i made them a promise to share their visual testimony with the world. for several years now, their training has continued and an additional two training programs have been launched in other camps for syrian refugees and displaced yezidis kurds. it is thanks to their desire to share their testimony that their work could be presented on the banks of the seine, as part of an exhibition , dream of humanity, at the photo aubrac festival at duhok university and, in the heart of the european commission with participation of eu- undp local area development program in iraq. knowing that kurdistan regional government with 4 million population hosting almost two million refugees and idp s ,it has become a duty for me to spread the word. it was an honor that federica mogherini high representative of the union for foreign affairs and security policy vice-president of the european commission came to the opening. i offered my book "reza war + peace". #kurdistan #refugeechildren #europeancommission #war+peace #book #federicamogherini #exhibition #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #رضادقتى #عكاس @thephotosociety #hrvp #mogherini #repost @rezaphotography

#pakistan i was on assignment for national geographic on afghanistan. the shipwrecked boats in the harbor of karachi are the object of everyone’s desire, eyed for their worth as sources of metal. once dismantled, the carcasses of the boats, their hulls gutted, are the subject of heated bargaining. after they are sold, some of the iron plates from the boats will make the long trip from karachi to the remote and dangerous tribal zones near the border that separates pakistan from afghanistan. twelve pashtun tribes have lived in this area, in self-sufficient isolation. nevertheless, their secluded homeland is a strategic passageway, which has made it a focal point in the global geopolitical game. the members of one of these tribes are renowned as gunsmiths. in days gone by, the darra village craftsmen fashioned swords, but now they create replicas of every type of gun, reproducing even the most sophisticated of firearms with so much precision that experts are unable to tell they are copies. manufactured in small, makeshift workshops, the guns are made using the iron plates taken from the boats. forged and sharpened, the metal is turned into weapons. the various military conflicts that have troubled this region since 1979, including the russian invasion of afghanistan, have caused the demand for arms to soar. to fulfill the orders, all hands are recruited, even the little hands of children. text written by rachel deghati. published in "war + peace" (national geographic publishing, 2007) and "reza, entre guerre et paix" (national geographic publishing, 2008). #workshop #pashtun #afridi #handgun #colt #handmade #handmadegun #weapon #child #childlabour #gun #manufactured #firearm #childhand #picoftheday #igers #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #رضادقتى #عكاس @thephotosociety

Looking for trance #egypt i was on assignment for national geographic on nile delta. each day, as the sun makes its slow arc over cairo, the level of noise grows louder by the hour. every single neighborhood is crowded with people, some loitering or moving with relaxed nonchalance, others frantically hurrying. the city is packed so densely that squatters have taken over the cemeteries on the city’s eastern edge. in the city of the dead, they have erected homes and shops among the tombs, amid the silence of the dead. although they are asserting the rights of the living, they show consideration for the tombs, living in respectful cohabitation with the dead. by nightfall, the city of dead comes fully alive, particularly during the mulids, the merry and noisy celebrations in honor of a saint. while walking through the city at night, i make out the sound of some drums and the daf, a large drum. the percussive instruments are marking a regular and frantic rhythm. somewhere in the maze of dark alleys, some sufis must be playing. i come closer. i can hear their voices now, low and bursting forth from the depths of their bodies and souls. i come closer still. there they are, wearing their long, white tunics, which stand out against the red decorations for the mulid. their heads move in harmony with the music. their faces are covered with sweat. their eyes close. they go into a trance. the men turn inward, exhausted after the divine drunkenness of the long hours of the night.these two women , looking over the scene of mulid from their room in second floor that was build over a tomb was chating and looking the dance all the night. text written by rachel deghati. published in "plus l**n sur la terre" (hors collection publishing, 2002), "war + peace" (national geographic publishing, 2007) and "reza, entre guerre et paix" (national geographic publishing, 2008). #women #window #light #mulid #celebration #poetry #cairo #night #picoftheday #igers #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #عكاس #رضادقتى @thephotosociety

The tree of secrets #turkey i was on assignment for national geographic on turkey. though he died long ago, the mystic poet hajji bektash veli still inspires pilgrims to gather in his native town, not far from the lunar landscapes of cappadocia. a wishing tree stands near the sufi’s mausoleum. tens of thousands of pilgrims arrive in august for an annual festival in his honor. with a fervor that has never dimmed through the centuries, they pray, weep, and dance for several days. at the tree, they ask that their prayers be granted. the sacred mulberry tree offers to the wind pieces of fabric, traces of secrets, and wishes tied on its branches. text written by rachel deghati. published in "war + peace" (national geographic publishing, 2007), "reza, entre guerre et paix" (national geographic publishing, 2008) and "sur les routes de la soie" (hoëbeke publishing, 2007). #alevi #tree #blue #grace #nature #sky #friendship #serenity #secret #calm #beautiful #majesty #poetry #sufi #mulberrytree #wishes #turkish #picoftheday #igers #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #عكاس #رضادقتى @thephotosociety
