I was inspired by the discussion @teawithmd and @yangswearabouts had about partners in medicine

it made me do a lot of self reflecting on my relationship. we started dating when were 16, and we’ve grown together through the major milestones -
support. medical school was stressful and i threw myself at with an all or nothing mentality. i was willing to sacrifice almost anything in the beginning. i would wall myself up in a cubicle studying all day. almost everyday. my friends from med school know i’m an excessive studier. during this time erik gave me the space i needed. he knew how much i wanted this. how much this meant to me, and he gave me the unconditional support to follow through. after the first year i got my feet under me and i got better at balance. but it wasn’t without his grace and understanding that i got there.

understanding. we talk on the phone almost everyday and when i’m decompressing i love that i don’t have to stop talking medicine. or stop to explain things. he just gets it. it’s a two way street. (he’s an er nurse). when he tells me they had to code an infant or they had to tell a patient they had cancer- i get it. there’s heartache in medicine and it’s important to process those emotions.

residency. he told me he would move anywhere i wanted to go. it was the most selfless and gracious thing he could’ve said. he went on interviews with me to see where would be a good fit for us. he never tried to influence my decision, and it was the most meaningful thing he could’ve done for us

relationships in medicine are hard. we’ve been long distance for over 4yrs. it takes sacrifice. it takes communication. it takes patience. but it’s worth it. don’t let anyone ever tell you you don’t have time for it. life’s about priorities 💕
