Altho i’m acting playful in these images, this exhibit was tough to take in. it was how i coped and covered up my feelings in front of my boys. i used to wish for a pet tiger. i wished i was a lion. i love snakes. so i cried. more than a few times. the eminent extinction of these beautiful animals is overwhelming. .

Video by @joelsartore | this javan gibbon, rose, is alive and thriving today thanks to @balisafari . at three months old, she was in poor health and destined to be sold in the illegal pet trade. thankfully, she was rescued and given a home @balisafari , where she has been well cared for. found only in java, indonesia, there are less than 2,000 of these gibbons left in the wild because of habitat destruction and the illegal pet trade. conservation institutions such as @balisafari and @taman_safari work to save this species by rescuing confiscated javan gibbons. without professional care and socialization with other gibbons, this species’ chance at survival is slim outside of their natural habitat. these institutions also collaborate with the bogor agricultural university to successfully manage a captive breeding program for this endangered primate species. to see a still of rose, follow @joelsartore . #photoark #javangibbon #notapet

@joelsartore photo ark. seemingly in awe, a six-week-old female western lowland gorilla has its picture taken at the cincinnati zoo. surveys since the 1980s suggest that commercial hunting and outbreaks of the ebola virus are behind the gorilla species' plummeting numbers in its native africa.⠀

this federally endangered asiatic golden cat was photographed at the @assamzoo. the most common coat color is golden or red brown but the cat photographed here is melanistic, meaning black in color, which is rare. the asiatic golden cat is primarily found in forested areas, particularly tropical and subtropical moist evergreen forests. little is known about the ecology and behavior of the asiatic golden cat and more research is essential to understanding this species and implementing conservation. as a forest dependent species, it’s threatened by habitat loss throughout it's range. although deforestation rates in southeast asia have slowed some, they are still among the highest in the world. in addition, the species is threatened by increasing levels of illegal hunting and poaching for consumption, and for the sale of pelts and body parts. there is thought to be some level of poaching or hunting of this beautiful cat in literally every country across its range. #asiaticgoldencat #photoark #endangeredspecies #federallyendangered
