mark rothko was born marcus rothkowitz in dvinsk, russia (now daugavpils, latvia), on september 25, 1903, and immigrated to the united states with his family in his youth. in the mid-20th century, he belonged to a circle of new york-based artists (also including willem de kooning and jackson pollock) who became known as the abstract expressionists. his signature works, large-scale paintings of luminous colored rectangles, used simplified means to evoke emotional responses. rothko committed suicide on february 25, 1970.

in the 1920’s, albers was famous for his classes on color theory at germany’s bauhaus school of design. color was a lifelong interest, resulting in two books and a series of paintings. he was especially interested in the effects it generated by the proximity, rather than the mixing or layering, of color. in paintings like this, albers explained that “any transparent or translucent effects are illusionary (because nowhere is a color on top or on bottom another color).”

Mummification process

ancient egyptian embalming. historical artwork of ancient egyptians removing abdominal organs and gut before embalming. after death the ancient egyptians would immerse the body in bicarbonate of soda, inject the arteries with balsams, and remove the contents of the torso and replace them with bituminous and aromatic substances. finally the body was wrapped in cloths. the process was done to preserve the body. this kept a person's life-force (known as ka) intact according to egyptian belief.

i spent this morning having a wander around one of my favourite auckland landmarks, the war memorial museum.
at the moment there is remembrance lawn for the fallen soldiers during the war, its very somber as there are thousands of crosses, but a nice way to remember them. i recommend checking it out if you are in the area.
perched up on the hill overlooking the city, it’s always a nice place to visit, she’s a grand old building with plenty of skeletons in her closet....literally 😋

i love looking at the dinosaur bones, but would you rather visit an art or a history museum? 🏛

It was hard to tell what was more exciting at the soumaya; the architecture (> than the guggenheim for my $) the collection or unusual curation/hanging of the work.

The famous nautilus staircase @ bank negara malaysia museum and art gallery. this spiral structure symbolically reflects the desire for knowledge that never stops. the fluid movement in the design represents inquisitive and inquiring minds.

The question is:

why is art important?

before every tour to the uffizi gallery or any other museum i like to ask this question to my guests.

you come to a new place and decide to spend several hours or sometimes an entire day or two within the walls of a museum. why?

every person has his/her important reasons to choose to see art. sometimes the answers people give me are eye opening.

let’s talk. why is art important? is it important at all?

i will give my answer to this question in may next post :)

p.s. the painting in this picture was taken in london, at the national gallery. rembrandt, 1635. saskaita van uylenburgh in arcadian costume.
