💪🏻murph prep💪🏻
-
murph is arguably one of the most memorable crossfit workouts. it has intense meaning, it has a community vibe that rivals no other, and it also tends to push athletes to places they have gone (in both volume, duration, and intensity).
-
now, none of the things listed in the latter sentence are bad as long as you have the capacity and protective workload.
-
here’s a few workload indicators for you. in the last 4 weeks, you should have averaged about:
- 75 pull ups per week
- 100 push ups per week
- 200 cyclic knee flexion cycles
-
here’s a few injury indicators:
- if you have to ask “should i”, you probably know the answer.
- if it’s your first time, you should do the half version.
- if you’ve never gone sub 45 min, you don’t need a vest.
-
don’t lose the meaning of the workout in your own ego. be smart. be safe. and thank you to those who have served our country and paid the ultimate sacrifice.
-
the workout in the post is meant to be done prior to murph, as your last training/prep day heading into the hero wod. you can do it before your rest day prior, or the day before murph pending how you perform better.

Looking dreamy ...that post surgery dazed look with stylish backless hospital gown! excuse the freckle face, they were out in force after my week in the sun ☀️ ...reckon you could’ve played a good ‘dot 2 dot’ with them!
as an athlete, injuries are part and parcel of the job as you’re constantly pushing your body too and often past it’s limits. trying to get as much as you can from it and taking risks ... especially in an extreme sport like ski cross, those risks can be pretty high!
sounds silly forcing your body through those extremes ... but those risks and crazy intense training sessions are what release the endorphins and give us the buzz we crave as athletes!
after a serious knee injury in 2009 at the vancouver olympics test event my knee has always been my n****e and i’ve learnt how to listen to it, adapt training and live with it...which can be pretty frustrating when you can’t even walk to the shop some days! today saw surgery #4, a long awaited surgery from an injury i suffered in sweden before the 2018 olympics which we delayed as long as possible to avoid even more trauma, but ultimately we had to go in and sort it.
now it’s time to embark on yet another rehab, always a tough part of injury as you have to ‘slow down’ not something any athlete likes to do, but it’s also a great opportunity to listen to your body and rebuild any weaknesses along the way! so here’s to the opportunity to build my body even stronger 💪 🥂! i’ll try and document what i’m up to for any other people interested in knee rehab...be sure to drop me a message if you want any more info on what i’m up to! it’s always great to share ideas ...and keep the motivation levels up! let’s get this party started 🦵⛑🤙🙌

I’m a firm believer that with the current healthcare model for healthy and active populations, traditional pt has a hard time finishing the job.
-
the regulations set by insurance standards make touch-points either inefficient, or inadequate for late phase return to sport. especially in the gym.
-
this is why coaches are the best ally in bridging this gap. as a physical therapist, i want my coaches i am releasing clients to: to have the knowledge in this realm a pt has, knows return to sport workloads and progressions, and understands how to communicate these things with athletes. this is heavily emphasized in our immersion course.
-
truth is, at some point, post op athletes are going to return to the gym. someone with a tendon health issue is going to walk in the gym. somebody who hurt their back deadlifting is going to want to perform “diane”. i want to know my coach can handle that.
-
from @activeliferx :
-
should a coach really be helping people get out of pain?
.
yes. if that coach wants to, and knows how to, within their scope.
.
“coaches shouldn’t pretend to be doctors” is said by both wise people who mean to respect scope of practice and by ignorant people who mean to diminish the value of the coach.
.
the truth is that there is a limitation to the scope of a coach and the general rule is similar to the one we follow when we cross the street.
.
if there is any doubt, don’t do it.
.
while even though helping people get out of pain is in the scope for many coaches, not all want to do it, and that is respectable as well.
.
however, all coaches should be able to perform an assessment of their clients, joint by joint, and movement by movement. this is the only way to safely choose exercises for clients.
.
we recently asked one of the most respected coaches we know (we didn’t ask her permission so we won’t share who it was) the following question:
.
“which problem comes first, coaches aren’t professional, or coaches aren’t expected to act as professionals?”
.
her answer: “coaches aren’t expected to act as professionals.”
.
let’s elevate our expectations so that the coach can be what the coach needs to be.
