Thousands of families in puerto rico are still living with blue tarps in place of roofs, almost a year after hurricane maria struck the island. this is jose’s home, one of many we visited last week. jose also suffers from severe asthma but he smiles through it all. please donate to help. link in bio. #realestate #forsocialgood #givebackhomes .

In may, a frontline and @npr investigation found that the federal response to hurricane maria in puerto rico lagged behind the responses to harvey and irma on the u.s. mainland. .
last week, fema acknowledged for the first time it failed to properly prepare for last year's hurricane season. most of the shortcomings outlined in fema's report focused on the response to hurricane maria in puerto rico, and dovetailed with what we reported in "blackout in puerto rico." catch an encore presentation on @pbs tuesday, 7/17 - or watch online at any time (link in profile). .

With all of the devastation from hurricanes irma & maria, many animals have been left abandoned in the british v****n islands. this is why we created our animal rescue project as part of the @bvistronger initiative.⠀

aerial global community is heavily tied to the local organizations that rescue, rehabilitate, and care for abandoned animals, including horses, puppies, and kittens. ⠀

visit bvistronger.com to learn more about how you can help these animals.

Most disaster aid comes in the form of physical goods, usually standardized packages of food and toiletries. new research suggests that providing preloaded debit cards would often be better. the charity @givedirectly delivered $9.5 million to more than 6,000 families following last year’s hurricanes in texas and puerto rico. @givedirectly found that money is often superior to in-kind donations because it’s fungible and faster to deliver. research showed that those who received debit cards used them to buy a wide variety of goods, such as furniture, appliances, and building materials to fix damaged homes, in addition to food. such speed and efficiency is difficult to achieve when governments and charities act as central planners to deliver specific goods and services. head to our website to read more about how preloaded debit cards can be more efficient in helping disaster victims. #hurricanemaria #puertorico

A year after #hurricanemaria hit #puertorico, @fema confirmed what we’ve known all along: they were completely unprepared to handle the hurricane. this lack of preparedness cost many lives & puerto ricans are still suffering as a result. my statement here: https://bit.ly/2zfi48w

We are delighted with our partnership with the state university of new york (suny) and the city university of new york (cuny)! suny and cuny are made up of universities, colleges, and community & technical colleges across the state. thousands of students from suny and cuny applied to join our project and a total of 300 students were selected to join nechama over the summer.
on june 17th we met our first group of 60 students, and yesterday we welcomed our 3rd group of 60. they’re working on homes in and around loiza, bayamon, and guaynabo, primarily clearing out damaged homes, repairing roofs, and rebuilding roofs of homes damaged by hurricanes irma and maria. the students were selected by suny & cuny after a rigorous application process. their passion and commitment to the cause have been clearly reflected in the work carried out so far!! “we are honored to be working with governor cuomo, the state of new york, unicef usa, and especially the suny and cuny systems in this effort. this partnership will allow nechama to scale up our efforts in puerto rico this summer and make much needed home repairs ahead of future storms.” -david kaplan, nechama executive director #nechama #disasterrelief #puertorico #suny #cuny #hurricanemaria #governorcuomo #ny #hurricaneirma #volunteerschangetheworld #unicefusa 📸 @jogo_times

Having spent time in puerto rico in the aftermath of #hurricanemaria, our property loss consulting team knows first-hand of the devastation caused by the september 2017 storm and the island’s long road back to normalcy. at the plrb west regional adjusters conference last month in glendale, arizona, we hosted a beach party to benefit the #puertorico recovery effort. plc staff raised $500 through the sale of tropical print shirts—in thornton tomasetti terracotta and olive, of course—and the firm is providing matching funds. “it was a great event,” said associate principal chris kahanek, who along with michelle jarosz organized the fundraiser. “many of the people we met talked about what they were doing to help puerto rico get back on its feet. it’s rewarding to see such support for this worthy cause.” at the event are (from left) giovanni sagastume, christina salchow, michelle jarosz, brian shen, ruchika kaur, amy phillips, lourdes kahanek and chris kahanek. #thorntontomasetti

[2/3] pam has lived on st. john for many years, raising her son and grandson in her home. during the storm, her house collapsed around her.
.
“my roof was a point, not flat, and i landed right in the middle of the roof point, like i was in a pyramid.... how can that even happen... i thought maybe my dad’s spirit was there and i asked him what was i going to do and he said, 'you are going to get out of there.'"
.
volunteers worked tirelessly for weeks to clear pam's property of debris. together, we were able to recover what we could.
.
hear more about pam's incredible story of resilience tomorrow.
.
you can help homeowners like pam throughout one of our many programs. we provide a free and open door to all volunteers. learn more via the link in our bio.
