from my collection: félix abraham, perversions sexuelles d’après l’enseignement du docteur magnus hirschfeld. (paris: françois aldor, 1931); first edition; translated from the german and adapted by dr. pierre vachet. at left: the frontispiece portrait of abraham.
.

félix abraham (1901–1937) was one of the most important collaborators of dr. mangus hirschfeld (1868–1935) at the institute for s****l science in berlin. abraham headed the forensic medicine department at the institute from 1929 until the institute was destroyed by the nazis in 1933.
.

in addition, abraham served as the contact for transgender clients of the institute. he published the medical journal report on the first two gender confirmation surgeries performed at the institute. his other publications include the 1931 overview of hirschfeld's work for french readers seen in this photo.
.

abraham escaped the nazis and was living in florence in the late 1930s. for reasons not yet clear, he committed suicide there in 1937. he is interred in the jewish cemetery outside the porta san frediano in florence. he also is commemorated with a stolperstein in front of the house where he lived at gritznerstraße 78 in berlin-steglitz.
.

this afternoon, i had the honor of meeting abraham's grand niece and hearing stories about her efforts to discover the details of his life. the traumas wrought by the n**i era were so great that her grandfather would say nothing about his brother, and other relatives only remembered him as a dear man from their early childhood years.
.

i'm hoping the grand niece will now be able to share some family photos she has seen that include félix abraham — and that she may be able to identify him in even more. (the grand niece is a colleague of my sister, who kindly introduced us.)

“in 1299, the commune and people of florence decided to build a palace that would be worthy of the city's importance, and that would be more secure and defensible in times of turbulence for the magistrates of the commune. arnolfo di cambio, the architect of the duomo and the santa croce church, began construction upon the ruins of palazzo dei fanti and palazzo dell'esecutore di giustizia, once owned by the uberti family. giovanni villani (1276–1348) wrote in his nuova cronica that the uberti were "rebels of florence and ghibellines", stating that the palazzo was built to ensure that the uberti family homes would never be rebuilt on the same location. duke cosimo i de' medici (later to become grand duke) moved his official seat from the medici palazzo in via larga to the palazzo della signoria in may 1540, signalling the security of medici power in florence. when cosimo later removed to palazzo pitti, he officially renamed his former palace to the palazzo vecchio, the "old palace", although the adjacent town square, the piazza della signoria, still bears the original name. cosimo commissioned giorgio vasari to build an above-ground walkway, the vasari corridor, from the palazzo vecchio, through the uffizi, over the ponte vecchio to the palazzo pitti. cosimo i also moved the seat of government to the uffizi.
the palace gained new importance as the seat of united italy's provisional government from 1865–71, at a moment when florence had become the temporary capital of the kingdom of italy. although most of the palazzo vecchio is now a museum, it remains as the symbol and center of local government; since 1872 it has housed the office of the mayor of florence, and it is the seat of the city council. the tower currently has three bells; the oldest was cast in the 13th century.”

Missing this place more than ever right now. it’s been quite the adjustment getting back into the new york city lifestyle after living in italy for 6 months. when i first got back, i had major reverse culture shock, now i’m slowly getting back into the swing of things. everyday i remind myself to think like a european. live slowly, cherish every inch of beauty around you, and enjoy life. ♥️ .
