a training cycle will most likely yield improvements if the program challenges the athlete gradually more and more, and if the exercises prescribed are performed in the way that they should. ⠀

in one quick example, let’s think of s****h and clean pulls. these are assistance exercises that are performed with the goal of correlating to improvement in the s****h and clean. assistance exercises serve as a means to an end.⠀

what i mean by that is that they’re present to get the pull stronger and more powerful to carry over to ultimately snatching and cleaning more weight. this is most effectively accomplished by performing the pulls in as similar of a fashion as possible as the pull would be executed in an actual s****h and clean.⠀

if weights far in excess of what one is capable of snatching and cleaning are used, then the quality of movement begins to deteriorate, and the movement begins to deviate from the way they would be executed in the full lifts. when this happens, the pulls become an end in themselves. ⠀

many great coaches of this sport have reminded me to always be deliberate in everything that my athletes do. i used to mentally check out once my lifters finished the full lifts but now i’m making sure that everything that they do is carried out with intent. a good training cycle is a good training program accompanied by quality execution of the exercises!⠀
