As the sea ice melts and breaks up earlier, and re-forms later, the arctic season of summer becomes longer every year. the ice recedes further north every summer, making it more difficult for polar bears to follow it. this results in more polar bears trapped on land and during many months they have to fast, waiting for the next winter and ice to return. if this trend continues the consequences could be disastrous; when the arctic sea ice melts, the survival of the polar bear is at risk. scientists predict the arctic ocean could be ice free in summertime already in 15-20 years. if the ice vanishes, where will the life dependent on it go? the marine ecosystems of these northern latitudes are fragile and completely dependent upon an ice-covered arctic sea. • the evidence is here, and it is clear. man is tipping the balance of nature. global warming is a reality, and scientists agree it is strongly influenced by human activities. the arctic is its ground zero; it is time to make some vital choices, and to take action. ten of the warmest years on record, globally, have occurred during the last fifteen years. when our climate changes too fast, life is threatened. a world of rich and diverse nature, a beautiful paradise of white, will collapse. • sea ice, the definition of what we see as the arctic, is dissolving, and when summer starts to intrude on winter, the season of winter as we know it, could become extinct. is there a future for snow and ice? @fredgranath
