i met the incredible karen gillan (@karengillanofficial ) who portrays nebula. nebula and gamora are sisters not related by blood. i was able to thank gillan for portraying an adoptee sister. she said, in her perfect scottish accent, "yeah, there isn't really that much representation, is there? well i really love that relationship with gamora." as an adoptee, that really meant the world to me πŸ˜ƒ

also, she thought the picture was adorable and she was happy to sign it.

Most people who know me know that "thor: ragnarok" was one of my all-time favorite movies. it was the first time i saw an accurate portrayal of an adoptee sibling bond. the characters of thor and loki (loki in particular) are very dear to me. and tessa thompson's valkyrie was just friggin awesome.

i picked up some figures for my personal office and i love them ☺️ (unfortunately, i was unable to find a movie gamora pop, which are apparently impossible to find 😞) #adopteerepresentation #thor #loki #valkyrie #convention #foreveralokigal

Yesterday was one of the best days of my life.

i had my photo op with the actor behind one of the only adoptee characters i've ever encountered (@twhiddleston who plays loki) and the magnificent artist (brianna garcia: @briannacherrygarcia ) who made me feel seen and respected as a nerdy adoptee in fandom. it may seem small and insignificant, but it truly filled me with joy.

i had gotten my makeup done early in the day. threw on loki's colors (special thanks to my beloved friend taia hartman for the shirt, one of the best birthday gifts ever), threw on a necklace with loki's horns, and finally pinned on my "adopted and proud" pin.

there wasn't much time to chat, so i basically burst into the room when instructed, saw hiddleston and said, "[gestures to him] favorite actor, [gestures to brianna] favorite artist, best day ever!" (i think that made him chuckle and according to brianna, he said, "that's wonderful"). the picture was snapped and we were ushered out.

we picked up our prints and then brianna said, "come here you" and we just embraced so tightly. i'm not ashamed to admit i almost started crying.

because i literally took a picture with two people who changed my life, albeit in very different ways. hiddleston's portrayal of loki, a flawed yet sympathetic adoptee, was something i had never seen before. that character reminded me that adoptee stories that don't revolve around g*ddamn reunions are valid and worth being told.

brianna garcia drew the most beautiful portraits of adoptee siblings hugging at a time when i was facing a lot of rejection due to my being an adoptee. and she finished the commission at a time when i lost someone so very dear to me, another adoptee. everything, everything, hurt and then when i saw the commission, it reminded me that the pain wouldn't last. and...it reminded me that i didn't have to be ashamed of being an adoptee.

so, in this picture, i'm feeling an overwhelming joy and wearing a pin that says "adopted and proud," standing beside the two people who reminded me that that's what i was

Today, @acecomiccon i finally got the chance to thank @twhiddleston for his extraordinary portrayal of an adoptee, one who non-adoptees cheered for. or at least, i tried. i fear i became rather tongue-tied and started crying a bit.

because i realized i would never be able to express just how much it means to have representation when you thought you never would.

just how wonderful it is that future adoptees now have a character like them (something many of us never had while growing up). how amazing it is to feel like your experiences, your narrative, actually matters.

i babbled for a bit too long, but i really desperately hope mr. hiddleston knows just what an incredible gift he has given adoptees and i hope he knows how grateful many of us are. πŸ˜ƒ

i had him sign a @briannacherrygarcia (because her work is extraordinary and it always makes me smile) and i got a thor: ragnarok picture signed, because that movie was the first time my brother and i ever saw an accurate portrayal of an adoptee sibling bond.

mr. hiddleston, from the bottom of my adoptee heart: thank you.

One good thing about chillier weather: i finally get a chance to break out my loki arm-warmers/gauntlets. my bestie hand knit these for me, using loki colors (since i tend to wear mostly black, we decided green & gold would be best). we both knew marvel was going to fridge loki and she knew how upset i was: i was already grieving the loss of one of the only adoptees i knew (someone who was very dear to me), and had another friendship fall apart due in part to being adopted. now i was going to lose literally the only representation i had in movies i enjoyed. it sucked. my bestie, being awesome, finished these up in time for the con she helps me table at.

look how pretty! :) and they're also very warm, which i know is kind of...not exactly in keeping with the whole frost giant aspect :-p still, i love them.
