The sound of mouth harp
#cheleken
in turkmenistan, i managed to leave the capital, ashgabat. i had one week to photograph the shores of the caspian sea before reaching azerbaijan by boat. on the small island of cheleken, i unintentionally witnessed a scene which filled me with joy. light gently touched on a group of actors rehearsing a local tale. a poetical moment, when the photographs are imbued with lyricism, where perfection lies in the protagonists’ movements, the lines and light are harmonious: a sheer gift for the eyes and for me as a photographer. le son de la gimbarde. au turkménistan, j'ai réussi à quitter la capitale, achgabat afin de photographier pendant une semaine les rives de la mer caspienne avant d'atteindre l'azerbaïdjan en bateau. sur la petite île de cheleken, j'ai été le témoin involontaire d'une scène qui m'a rempli de joie. la lumière d'une fin de journée caressait doucement un groupe d'acteurs répétant un conte local. pur moment de poésie, où les photographies sont marquées par le lyrisme, où la perfection réside dans les mouvements des protagonistes, les lignes et la lumière : un pur cadeau pour les yeux et pour moi en tant que photographe.

sufis in new york.
musicians during a concert in tribute to rûmi, the mystic and sufi persian poet of the 13th century.

what does that kind of secret-code word, obor, means? one belt, one road ... a small diminutive to evoke the vast project launched by china in 2013: new silk roads or one belt, one road.
the silk road recalls in the collective unconscious, a mythical road of discoveries and commercial but also cultural exchanges. there, the loaded caravans used to brave all the dangers for years of an endless journey. it was another era.
as a photographer, i was able sometimes to capture the spirit of this past road.
today, china's ambition is to strengthen multiple trade links with the middle-east, africa, and europe by sea and land.
between today's world and yesterday's memories, i want to share with you a serie of these silk routes.

Repost: introspection

to observe the world, to be an humble visual witness its wounds as well as of its victories, is about becoming a sounding board. the photographer can not cheat with witnessing: his photograph is a proof of his presence here or there.
facing the chaos of the world and returning again and again in the middle of the battle, animated by the desire to tell through the langage of image, needs sometimes to stop. it is necessary to withdraw into silence, contemplating the illusion of nothingness. the calm beauty around strengthen you.

introspection

#bleu #homme #poetic l#mer #sea #plage #beach #blue #man #eau #bird #oiseau #soaring #emptiness #vide #calme #calm #loneliness #solitude #envol #water #summer #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #webistan #رضادقتى #عكاس @thephotosociety

The ruins of an ancient city while on assignment for national geographic in turkey, on the anatolian fault and the physical damages through history, i discovered the ancient site of hierapolis.
the city was ceded to the romans in 133 bce, and was later ravaged by an earthquake. only a few vestiges of her former splendor remain, some engulfed in its hot springs. these warm waters still caress the bodies of the tourists who come to visit.

who would not love swimming between the columns of the temple of apollo in the ancient site of hierapolis (which means “holy city”). the city was ceded to the romans in 133 bce, and was later ravaged by an earthquake. only a few vestiges of her former splendor remain, some engulfed in its hot springs. these warm waters still caress the bodies of the tourists who come to visit. i found in the walk towards light of this man, the idea of the prenatal experience in the life of every human being. bains antiques

i was in one of the most dangerous assignment for national geographic magazine, ever. i have been few months in the mountains along the pakistan border, roaming through villages on the front lines between the taliban and us special forces. one day, after few hours of trekking in the mountains, i arrived in the village of tora bora. she was there, playing with the other children, and suddenly she turned to me. i had time for just a few frames. she was born and raised during the times of the heaviest bombardment ever in her land and the entire history of the afghan war can be found in the depths of this innocent girl’s eyes.

Building bride

i like bridges, all kind of bridges.
they are those tangible and intangible links that fight against division, cleavage.
i like all concrete and virtual actions that connects things, locations but also people, worlds, societies.
i take pictures of bridge around the world, and i try to do my best through my actions to encourage links that bring people together despite their differences..
we should all work in that direction for a better world.

azerbaijan, shirvan, ismailli (ismayilli) district
an iron suspension bridge spans the girdmanchay, a fast-flowing river. when it rains heavily, the river smashes against the banks and destroys everything in its way. in the spring and autumn, the only way to cross from the lahij village road to zarnava is via this suspension bridge.

Repostby @rezaphotography: "the solitude of the traveler

#afghanistan
this traveler, poised on the summit of a mountain brought to mind my own road traveled. i discovered the enlightened wandering of a traveler during my adolescence in my native iran, and i found i loved it. it is a feeling that pushes one out of one’s comfort zone, getting on the road, exposing oneself to the unknown, to encounters, sometimes, even to danger, to the suffering when you push yourself and the joy of taking a break and finding a welcoming smile. i have often hiked alone, with only my camera for companion. those years whetted my appetite for taking to the road in search of the unknown, which could take the form of a person or a landscape. i have always had a desire for physical experimentation with insatiable curiosity. then there is only one step between discovery and desire, the need to share it with the rest of the world, and, consequently to bear witness to it through photography. ever since, my life has been lived between war and peace, along the roads of the world.

Rebirth

the long winter, wet and cold, dark and gray, exhausts the mind. the first signs of spring awake the senses. the bodies "snort" gently when souls come out of their fatigue.
nature explodes and presents a painting of colors that reminds us of life.
then, will come the hot torpor of summer, the flaming autumn. later, we will look forward to the sweet retreat of winter.
the cycle of the seasons of life.

renaissance

#azerbaijan,
the mourning totem

the view of the sinuous road winding its way to the horizon, incited one to reflect upon life. the beauty of the place was obvious, inspiring, exhilarating. there, the colorful totem brought to mind the finality of our lives – the death which lies around a bend in the road, where we leave a conspicuous trace in the eyes of the living.

the view along the drive from the khinalig village to the gabala region. located on a summit in the caucasus mountains, the northern village is referred to as “an island in the mountain” since is the highest and most remote village in the country. the village dates back at least 5,000 yeas. the population of approximately 1,200 people belongs to the kettidt minority. they have preserved their unique language (kettish) and way of life.

published in the book " elegance of fire"

Photo by @rezaphotography #rwanda // face to face // how many times i have been confronted with situations of extreme distress: a young rwandan girl on the path to exile, wandering beneath the rain, feet in the mud, massacres on her mind, weighed down with the burden of solitude. i am the witness who passes in the night and i want to tell the world of the struggles i encounter. but despite all the time i have spent with them, despite the interest i have in their struggles and their situation, despite the slow, deliberate gestures with which i try to handle my camera, i still read doubt in their eyes from time to time. this heightens my sadness, which mingles with the beauty and strength in these faces.

The king’s tears

#usa, #washington i have a dream !

in washington dc, the day is breaking. on this day which commemorates the rev. martin luther king, i remember a peace march.

the chill in the air brings to mind all the refugee families who are also marching, trying to survive the cold amidst the european forests and “jungles.” after having passed many hours over many days with king’s acolytes, i perceive a great foreboding in each of their faces, reminiscent of that of former prisoners whose memories are haunted by the tortures they have suffered. each of them fears that their work consists of eternally starting over, that the threat hanging over them will return over and over again, for them and their descendants.

this sense of a vague apprehension that i know so well strikes me from my very first meeting with the followers of martin luther king, gathered around the washington monument.
at the end of a march that lasted several hours in a cold, melancholy ambiance bereft of joy... i did see tears, those of a stone statue, a dreamer, whose gaze has been fixed for eternity, and who seemed to share the sorrow of the moment.
here and there, we continue to dream for more humanity, justice and freedom, ideals that need defending now more than ever.

Winnie mandela -
apartheid, this word still sounds like an insult to the ear. such a short time ago, it was a value in south africa : the foundation of a white society convinced of its superiority. in those days, nelson mandela was a figure of resistance against apartheid, the world’s oldest prisoner behind bars. so, i went to the south african consulate as an elephant hunter, which allowed me to get a three months visa to go there and witness daily demonstrations, gold mining strikes and long march organized in august 1985 to demand mandela’s freedom.
i was then in contact with secret activists, who had warned winnie mandela of my arrival. after a warm welcome, i began to take some photographs.
hardly an hour later, the sound of cars sharp b**w brakes frozen us. soldiers were already entering the dwelling, pointing their rifles at us. everyone would have feared for his life; it was then that we saw the resistant lady begin to scream that this intrusion was illegal. she did not fear these intruders in uniform, and insulted them.
galvanized by her courage, we then tried to resist with her, standing up to the officers and soldiers who wanted to intimidate us.
after several hours of interrogation, each in a separate room, we followed the scenario that we had imagined. we were only two tourists; me, elephant hunter, visiting the sun city. having squandered our currency from the trip to the casino, and a friend from paris having told us that anyone who could photograph and interview a lady we knew nothing about and who answered winnie mandela's name, would have enough money to continue the journey. we just tried our luck.
being convinced of our innocence, we were then thrown out of the interrogation building.
we had moved away with a limping step. it was only a few hundred more meters that we had sighed with relief, taking out for me the dandruff i could hide in time in my underwear before being carried away by the military, and my friend his little tape recorder also hidden under his clothes.
two weeks later, the story about the lady from south africa appeared in the pages of the prestigious magazine called ‘’elle”.

@rezaphotography - the frame or the magic of the eye
in dogubeyazit, in eastern turkey, unemployment, misery and bad weather make for a morose ambiance. on assignment for several months, i made my way through a culture very much like my own. a certain sort of “easternness”. once i arrived in town, my heart leapt at being so close to the mountain that sits on the border between the two countries. as we turn out of a small street, into a large avenue, i see the mountain rise up. suddenly i saw them, holding the frame of an old tv. they were crossing the large avenue. i cast a quick eye upon the scene. instinctively, i know that “it” will happen. i tapped the shoulder of my driver and cried, “stop!” i got out and took a few photos. only one remained. magic offers itself to you, but you have to recognize and seize it. //

innocence
pakistan was far behind me. my feet were tired from weeks of walking and hiking up mountain slopes. i was exhausted, physically worn out by the harshness of the weather, the lack of food and rest, and the constant tension of worrying that the enemy might ambush us. nevertheless, i kept moving forward. as i continued walking, i suddenly found myself in front of one of nature’s gifts, the place where the mountains of the himalayas meet those of the hindu kush. i arrived in a village. the children rushed up to me and surrounded me, as children often do with strangers here, and they began to imitate me, playing at being photographers. their laughter, their warmth, and their spontaneous friendliness erased all of the fatigue and discouragement i’d felt. it reminded me of quote by james rumford : “traveling — it offers you a hundred roads to adventure, and gives your heart wings!” #afghanistan #kids #enfant #rire #children #instagood #goodtime #smile #happy #photooftheday #photojournalism #thephotosociety #reza #rezadeghati #rezaphoto #rezaphotography #pictureoftheday @webistan @thephotosociety #رضادقتى# عكاس
