Poses i can’t do... ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿป‍โ™€๏ธ
i know it’s meant to be a compliment,
though i can’t help but laugh a little
when i read a comment on any of my
photos or videos that says:
“is there anything you can’t do?” ๐Ÿ˜Š
i guess i find it funny because in my head there is a long list of things i can’t do ๐Ÿ˜‚ (& this video shares just a few of them).
the truth is there will likely be hundreds of asanas (or more) that i may never be able to access in this lifetime.
and you know what?
i’m totally ok with that! i’ve learned that i don’t need a check mark next to every yoga posture or transition that exists. my practice isn’t any less valuable without them.
and i want to share this important reminder with you too. โค๏ธ
because being on this platform means
we are exposed to incredible shapes and
movements on the daily. but the value of our practice doesn’t change wether or not we can access them.
it’s wonderful to enjoy the things we see here, and it’s fantastic to feel inspired, but the most valuable part of our practice is to be grateful for all of the things that we can do. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ
wanna join me in spreading this
important message?
share the poses you can’t do, tag me in your post, and use the hashtags:
#posesicantdo #yogawithriva i’ll be sharing them in my stories!

One of the questions i get asked all of the time (aside from how to learn this yoga pose overnight ๐Ÿ˜‚) is how to transition from casual instagram user to professional influencer.
well, i’m excited to share that i’ve partnered with @famehq - a newly launched app designed to teach you how to do just that. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ
no magic tricks or weird hacks, and absolutely no bots or anything fake!
just the tools and advice you need on how take your passion and grow an authentic & organic following from there.
now available at the app store, you can peak at my stories for a little preview of what features you can expect to see with this awesome app. clear and simple advice, useful analytics, and even a built-in media kit generator just to name a few!

Knee protection ๐Ÿ’™
just because jon snow had no problem ‘bending the knee’, doesn’t mean it’s an effortless experience for everyone... ๐Ÿ˜‚ #yogihumor ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿป‍โ™€๏ธ #sobad ok, i know that joke deserves a massive eye roll, but the truth is, the thought of getting into certain yoga poses - especially ones that require deep hip rotation - warrants the very same response for many. accessing these postures can be painful or uncomfortable on the knees, particularly if the required flexibility isn’t quite there yet.
it’s so important to protect our knees - they are the largest, most complex, and perhaps the hardest working joints in our body! they literally absorb the shock of maneuvering us through every day life. ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿป๐Ÿคพ๐Ÿป‍โ™€๏ธโ›น๐Ÿป‍โ™€๏ธ
luckily we can modify these poses to still reap the benefits but without the pain or strain! now isn’t that the bee's knees?!
๐Ÿ๐Ÿ™Š (ok, i’m done, i promise!)
1๏ธโƒฃ toe stand - this pose requires deep external hip rotation in the elevated leg & demands an intense bend in the knee of the supporting leg. try limiting the bend in both knees to 90 degrees. it’s still a great hip-opener & challenging balance, plus there’s an additional thigh-burning bonus in this variation! ๐Ÿ”ฅ
2๏ธโƒฃ skandasana has an incredibly deep bend in the lunging knee. keep it to 90 degrees & you might notice it actually requires more strength to hold this way! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ
3๏ธโƒฃ reclining pigeon will provide the same hip-opening benefits as the upright version, but without the body weight putting pressure on the knee joint. keep the toes of the front foot flexed to activate the muscles around the knee.๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿผ
4๏ธโƒฃ weight-bearing postures can be an issue for those with hypermobile joints. keeping a small bend in the knee is one good modification, but taking a reclined variation provides a great stretch without putting pressure on the joint.
the last slide has some poses to help
strengthen the muscles around
the knees. ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ check my stories for a few tips on these 3 postures!
happy practicing!

Eenie meenie miney mo,
catch a yogi by the toe,
give her a hug and
don’t let go.
eenie meenie miney mo ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ
haha, i know, i know... poetry isn’t
quite my thing, but making shapes
on the beach with my sis definitely is! ๐Ÿ’™
this one (from our family trip together a few weeks ago) was such a fun one that @tditty2 & i did it twice! the first pic is from an early morning visit to the beach, and the video (swipe left) is from a different afternoon where we discovered this fun sandbar & loved the reflection it made. ๐Ÿ˜
i‘m posting both - not surprisingly ๐Ÿ˜‚ - because this indecisive libra over here can never pick just one... ๐Ÿ™ˆโค๏ธ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿป‍โ™€๏ธ
plus i know you guys enjoy seeing how we get into each pose! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ

Same, same... only different?
when you look at these 3 postures what’s the first thing you notice?
you might observe that the shape of my body in each is almost identical. and you probably realize that these poses all share many of the same benefits as well (opening the hamstrings, hip flexors, quads, and heart.) โค๏ธ
they’re really all pretty different too!
the change in orientation affects the entrance for each pose and the balance while in it. each posture has a completely different part of the body coming in contact with the floor. and all three asanas fall into separate categories - one is a standing balance, one kneeling, & one seated.
small changes, big difference.
which pose is your favorite? which do you this is most accessible? what about most challenging?

Every so often (especially on days when i’m feeling overwhelmed), i find myself moving too quickly through my practice.
it never makes me feel good - only more rushed - so here’s what i do when i notice that happening:
๐Ÿ”น i pause and take a few deep breaths,
๐Ÿ”น i visualize each inhale gradually making its way through every inch of my body,
๐Ÿ”น i begin to move slowly, imagining i’m utilizing my body’s own ‘slo-mo’ feature,
๐Ÿ”น i envision each muscle being used to flow through the movements,
๐Ÿ”น i hold calming postures (like child’s pose, a gentle forward fold, or downward dog) for a few extra breaths.
i always end up feeling more focused and relaxed afterwards.
what do you do to slow down - on and off - the mat? ๐Ÿฆ‹

The way you
react emotionally
is felt by every cell
in your body.
empowerment is
finding calm
in spaces you
once felt chaos.
~dr. nicole lepera
i’ve had these words tucked away for some time now, but thought i’d share them with anyone who might need to hear them too.
because life is full of curveballs.
and we always have the following choice:
to simply react, or
to consciously respond.
and in making that decision,
our practice is taken off the mat.
and that,
is when we find
our real power. ๐Ÿ’™

Wrist protection. ๐Ÿ’™
did you know that wrist pain & sensitively is one of the most common issues - both in and out of yoga?
so many of our day-to-day activities put strain on our wrists (smartphone, keyboard, & mouse usage are some big culprits! ๐Ÿ™ˆ)
on top of that, many yoga poses (like crow, chaturanga, wheel, even up dog & down dog) have us bearing much or all of our body weight in the delicate wrist joint. ๐Ÿ–๐Ÿฝ
practicing these poses repeatedly can trigger wrist pain & sensitivity, especially if we haven’t mastered the alignment or built up the strength & flexibility we need in these postures. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ
the good news is there are modifications you can take that still provide the same benefits of each pose, but without the strain or pain.
here are a few you can try:
1๏ธโƒฃ take crow pose down to the forearms (baby crow). ๐Ÿฆ…
2๏ธโƒฃ set up some angled blocks to reduce wrist strain in wheel pose.
3๏ธโƒฃ in poses like cow where you’re not bearing too much weight in the hands try using your fingertips instead sinking into the whole palm. ๐Ÿฎ
4๏ธโƒฃ take dolphin instead of downdog. ๐Ÿถ
the last slide has some great exercises & stretches to help relieve wrist discomfort (the detailed instructions for each can be found in my blog, link in bio).
