@world - BuzzFeed World | Nasrin Sotoudeh, one of Iran's most prominent human rights lawyers, says she has been sentenced to a total of 38 years in prison and 148 lashes, drawing international condemnation. Soutoudeh was arrested in her home in June last year without an explanation from the government. She was defending women who had been arrested after removing their hijabs in public protests at the time. Soutoudeh is being held at a prison in Tehran and told her husband about the latest sentence over a phone conversation on Monday, according to the Center for Human Rights in Iran. Her husband said she had been charged with taking part in an illegal assembly, propaganda against the state, disturbing public peace and order, appearing in court without a head scarf, and encouraging corruption and prostitution. Soutoudeh received the European Union's most prestigious human rights award, the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, in 2012 when she was serving a previous prison sentence. (📷: Getty)

mmuradi24
@mmuradi24 I am iranian.
your news is totally wrong.
the prison sentence is 7 years old and not 38 years old.
due to the disturbance in the law and order of society, which is supported by entrepreneurs.
why did you mention marzieh hashemi?#مرضيه_هاشمى
mmuradi24
@mmuradi24 @mamma_singh no, it's hard to live in iran because 95% of the people have voted for the islamic revolution and elected it. unfortunately, only the news of the opposing people comes to your attention.
_paulamontell
@_paulamontell @madeleinejohn hi! could you put it in your bio again pls?
vanessastefanie
@vanessastefanie From another online source regarding this story: “according to him, sotoudeh has refrained from choosing a lawyer as attorneys on her previous cases have faced prosecution for representing her. “she was not ready to sacrifice any lawyers again and create a situation that lawyers would be prosecuted because of her," khandan said, following a conversation they had in prison.”
courageous, strong, compassionate woman. this sentence is barbaric, unacceptable, unbelievable - a grave miscarriage of justice. what can be done????? we must do something.
madeleinejohn
@madeleinejohn @_paulamontell hey girl! it’s still in my bio! 😊

presssleyyyyyyy
@presssleyyyyyyy @thankyouiran the people and the rest don't matter if the government is f****d up they would put me in jail too for not wearing that head scarf
thankyouiran
@thankyouiran @presssleyyyyyyy because it’s a law! what does the american police do to you when you violate the law?! watch their videos on youtube when they shoot people in america for violating the law. in iran such a no thing would happen. and people won’t be jailed for no reason.
afshawakhattak
@afshawakhattak @misserin99 i have taken an islam course and my professor which is also an imam said that it is often mistaken that husbands can beat their wives. this is not the case. the translation that you’re reading translates the word to “beat” when the actual translation is “tap” and should never be on the face. the qur’an states that if a wife seems to be doing something suspicious like hanging around with another man or something like that you should first talk to her, then separate beds, then tap on her and ask her why she is cheating or whatever.
