@womenphotograph - Women Photograph | Photo by @choutoo | Hi! It’s Jessica here taking over for WP this week. I'm a photog based in SF & LA and I'm interested in chronicling contemporary American life. I do this through portraiture and documentary work - making photos of people who are shaping our world and looking for clues of our culture in our landscape and everyday life.

The first set of work I will be sharing is from my on-going series called Suburban Chinatown about my hometown in the San Gabriel Valley - a cluster of Asian-majority suburbs just 10-mins east of Los Angeles.
Growing up there, I had always felt like any regular kid living in the suburbs, attending a high school that aspired to be like that of a John Hughes movie (except the people mostly looked like me). And while I've always embraced mainstream American culture as my own, I also knew that life inside my home, as well as those of my friends, looked quite different... The series stems from that experience and it looks at daily life in the region. It explores how the landscape of this classic Californian suburb has informed the lives of the people who inhabit the San Gabriel Valley and it looks at how the community has grafted it's way into the memory of the landscape over the last 40 years.
