From my collection: Félix Abraham, Perversions sexuelles d’après l’enseignement du docteur Magnus Hirschfeld. (Paris: François Aldor, 1931); first edition; translated from the German and adapted by Dr. Pierre Vachet. At left: the frontispiece portrait of Abraham.
.

Félix Abraham (1901–1937) was one of the most important collaborators of Dr. Mangus Hirschfeld (1868–1935) at the Institute for Sexual Science in Berlin. Abraham headed the forensic medicine department at the Institute from 1929 until the Institute was destroyed by the Nazis in 1933.
.

In addition, Abraham served as the contact for transgender clients of the Institute. He published the medical journal report on the first two gender confirmation surgeries performed at the Institute. His other publications include the 1931 overview of Hirschfeld's work for French readers seen in this photo.
.

Abraham escaped the Nazis and was living in Florence in the late 1930s. For reasons not yet clear, he committed suicide there in 1937. He is interred in the Jewish Cemetery outside the Porta San Frediano in Florence. He also is commemorated with a stolperstein in front of the house where he lived at Gritznerstraße 78 in Berlin-Steglitz.
.

This afternoon, I had the honor of meeting Abraham's grand niece and hearing stories about her efforts to discover the details of his life. The traumas wrought by the Nazi era were so great that her grandfather would say nothing about his brother, and other relatives only remembered him as a dear man from their early childhood years.
.

I'm hoping the grand niece will now be able to share some family photos she has seen that include Félix Abraham — and that she may be able to identify him in even more. (The grand niece is a colleague of my sister, who kindly introduced us.)
