Photo by @franslanting two young cheetah brothers are crouching down to drink from a water hole in the serengeti. cheetahs may be able to survive for long periods without drinking water and rely instead on the blood from their prey, but they don’t pass up an opportunity to drink when they can. you can tell they are still young because of the ruff of fur along their necks, which disappears when they mature. follow us @franslanting and @christineeckstrom for more intimate encounters with cheetahs. @thephotosociety #cheetah #bigcats #endangered #wildlifephotography #wildlife #safari
Photo by @franslanting elephants in the wild get by with less sleep than virtually any other mammal it appears. according to one study they sleep only two hours every 24 hours. and most of the time they sleep standing up like this male was doing. after a cooling mud bath he draped his trunk over a tusk to reduce its weight and crossed one hind leg against another to relieve pressure as well. it’s in those private moments that i get a better sense of who they are and how they live when they are not harassed. and i keep on learning more, the longer i watch them. follow me @franslanting and @christineeckstrom for more intimate encounters of the elephant kind.

Photo by @franslanting elephants often sleep standing up to avoid pressure from their heavy bodies on their internal organs. but when they are really tired or very relaxed, they may sleep lying down on their sides. i caught this elephant taking a midday nap and she did something i had not seen before. she covered her face with a big floppy ear to screen out light and heat. i love watching elephants; they are so expressive and i always learn something new. if any of you have seen this unusual sleeping behavior i would love to hear from you. follow me @franslanting and @christineeckstrom for more encounters of the elephantine kind. @natgeocreative @thephotosociety #savetheelephants #zambia #elephants #safari #wildlife
Video by @christineeckstrom hawaii is red hot again with the new eruption of the kilauea volcano on the big island, which started last week and is still intensifying. our hearts go out to all the people in hawaii whose lives have been impacted by this eruption—please stay safe.. i covered kilauea's last major eruption for @natgeo. here’s a video impression by chris from the edge of the active lava lake that formed. what you’re hearing is not the wind, it’s the sound of the volcano. we were out there with permits in the company of volcanologists and we relied on their judgment for our movements as you can hear in the clip. this is not something you should ever do on your own. volcanoes command respect and in hawaii nobody takes chances with pele. go to @christineeckstrom for more videos from kilauea.

Photo by @franslanting elephants were hammered hard in zambia during the previous poaching holocaust in the 1970s and 1980s. their population plummeted from 250,000 in the 1960s to fewer than 18,000 in 1989. since then they have rebounded slowly. these days impressive gatherings can be seen again on the floodplains of the luangwa river. in this image you can see long lines of buffaloes mix with elephants as they come to drink from the river at twilight. follow me @franslanting and @christineeckstrom to see more elephants and other wildlife from africa. @natgeocreative @thephotosociety #savetheelephants #africa #elephants #conservation #ivory

Photo by @franslanting “march of the penguins” tomorrow, april 25, is world penguin day and i am celebrating it with this image of a procession of emperor penguins walking stoically through a blizzard on sea ice off antarctica where they raise their offspring. everything about the lives of emperor penguins is extreme. in order to capture any of it, you have to succumb to the same conditions that they endure, which is a challenge if you are not as well insulated as they are. but what a privilege it is to spend time with these amazing birds. another image i made of an emperor penguin cradling its newborn chick is available as a signed print for $100 as part of @natgeo creative’s flash sale of signed prints by me and some of my colleagues @natgeo in honor of earth day. visit the link in my profile to see all the prints. the sale ends on april 28. follow me @franslanting and @christineeckstrom to see more images of extreme nature.

A young cheetah licks his brother's cheeks stained with blood after they ate a gazelle caught by their mother. they are almost full grown, but the fuzz on their necks shows they are still juveniles. when cheetahs leave their mother after a childhood of a year and a half, males often stay together as a hunting coalition, but females become solitary and are faced with the double duty of hunting and caring for young. follow us @franslanting and @christineeckstrom to see some of our favorite cheetah family images and learn more about their plight in life. @natgeocreative @thephotosociety #cheetah #bigcats #bigcatsinitiative #endangered #wildlifephotography
