Pat schwaiger, #cpm, and #mountainmidwives owner says, "if you want the ketchup to come out of the bottle, you don't lay the bottle down. it's the same when you want the baby to come out of the mother." makes sense, right!?! unfortunately, we do not see that analogy in action, nearly enough, in our #maternity care system. in fact, according to @ebbbirth state of maternity care (2018), 57% of laboring individuals are confined to the bed once admitted to the hospital and 68% of people give birth lying on their back. neither one of these routine practices are supported by evidence and both situations can feel disempowering and may be potentially harmful to both mother and baby. we can't change these statistics overnight, but we can have valuable conversations about #birthculture and begin to re-shape the narrative, by empowering one another with information and support. so we have teamed up with @cubsupport to bring you a two-blog series all about upright birth. 🚶🏻‍♀️🤰🏽check out the links in our bio, "birth class show-and-tell" and "feminist birth positions" to learn more about how staying upright during #laboranddelivery can benefit both you and baby. ”hon - en katedral” installation (1966) by @niki_de_saint_phalle for @modernamuseet

Calling ☎️all ohio friends of birth: wouldn't you love to have your baby at a freestanding birth center, or at home, with a certified nurse-midwife?🤰🏽are you appalled by racial disparities that exist within institutionalized #healthcare systems? do you desire safer, healthier, and more respectful maternity care options? 🙋🏼‍♀️(the correct answer is yes!)then i urge you to reach out to your state delegates and tell them to support ohio house bill 726, the “better access to better care act”. this proposed legislation 📜would remove current ohio mandate, which limits your access to quality healthcare, by requiring advanced practice registered nurses (aprns), including nurse practitioners and nurse-midwives, be in an ultra-paternalistic supervisory agreement with physicians in order to practice. the current "collaborative agreement" is restrictive, unnecessary, and harmful.
enacting hb 726 will improve healthcare access for all ohioans. if this legislation is passed, you soon may be able to birth your baby at an amazing freestanding #birthcenter like this one at @wasatchmidwife or receive culturally competent, high-quality, affordable healthcare services from a place like @midwifecenter. if you want more and better health and #maternity care options, then you need to support legislation that gives ohio nurse-midwives and other aprns greater independence. currently 23 us states and @deptvetaffairs health care administration grant full practice authority to aprns, and now it's time for #ohio to do the same. please go to the link in our bio titled “support nurse-midwifery autonomy in ohio” to learn more about hb 726 and to be re-directed to the ohioans for healthcare access website. from there all you need to do is fill-out your contact information and hit submit. once complete, an auto-generated letter 📩 will be sent to your local state house representative, urging them to support this crucial piece of legislation. it literally takes less than 60 seconds! ⏰ don't underestimate the power of your voice and our collective action! please share this post and the link to contact your state representative. demand "better access to better care” now! 💪🏽💗

August 25th - 31st marks the 6th annual @blkbfingweek . this keynote week-long celebration closes out a full month of breastfeeding recognition and awareness, which also included @wbwgoals world breastfeeding week and @usbreastfeeding national breastfeeding month.
and if you are wondering why we need a black breastfeeding week...? 🤱🏽because only 64.3.9% of black babies have ever breastfed vs. 81.5% of white babies (source: @cdcgov )
🤱🏾because too many black babies are not breastfed beyond six weeks
🤱🏿because black babies are dying at twice the rate of white babies, and b****t milk provides critical nutrition that could help
🤱🏽because black women deserve culturally competent lactation support.
🤱🏾because intense unethical marketing of formula disproportionately affects black mothers and babies
🤱🏿because black mothers have inequitable access to breastfeeding help. 🤱🏽because culturally, historically, and socioeconomically, black women face challenges, barriers, and negative perceptions surrounding breastfeeding at a much greater rate than white women.
check out @blkbfingweek for more information. the stats above are summarized from @lamazechildbirth via blackbreastfeedingweek.org. image via the amazing brandi sellers. check her out at @bstereo and @momsincolor. link to #bbw2018 in our bio. #blackbreastfeedingweek #breastfeedingawarenessmonth #blackbreastfeeding #nbm2018 #wbw2018 #loveontop #foundationoflife
@regrann from @bstereo - i breastfed my oldest, jax, for 5 days. after 5 days, i stopped. i stopped because of a lack support. the hospital lactation consultant was quicker to show me how to dry up my milk, than to show me how to continue. looking back, i can recognize exactly what was happening. she took one look at me, a 24 year old black mother, and immediately determined statistically that i wasn’t worth her time or support. couple that with the fact that neither my mother or anyone in my family had breastfed long enough, if at all to be of support. it was 2006, there was no such thing as instagram or even an iphone to see beautiful photos or communities of mamas that looked like me breastfeeding they’re babes...

It is day 4 of world breastfeeding week 🤱🏽and this year's theme is #breastfeeding: foundation of life. did you know that the world health organization, which is part of the #wabaworldbreastfeedingweek alliance, recommends early and uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact between mothers and infants to promote breastfeeding? according to @who, early initiation of breastfeeding should occur as soon as possible after birth, ideally within the first hour after delivery. most current evidence indicates early breastfeeding increases the likelihood of exclusive breastfeeding for one to four months of life as well as the overall duration of breastfeeding. breastfeeding also protects against diarrhea and common childhood illnesses such as pneumonia, and may also have longer-term health benefits, such as reducing the risk of childhood and adolescence obesity. in fact, early breastfeeding is lifesaving! a 2006 study published in the journal of pediatrics about neonatal mortality and morbidity suggested that 22% of neonatal deaths (babies that died within the first four weeks after birth) could have been prevented if these babies were breastfed within their first hour of life. want to learn more about #waba #worldbreastfeedingweek and the lifesaving benefits of breastfeeding, then check out the link in our bio. @wbw_goals #wbw2018 #sdgs #foundationoflife #waba

Milk is magical! 🥛🦄 i know you are thinking, something like...'omg why does this lady have her dd's (.)(.) hanging out on instagram!?!' 🤦🏻‍♀️well, i just can't help myself, but i promise, this time it is for a purpose! everyone knows that breastfeeding is the biologically normal and optimal way to feed your baby (and toddler, even), and im thrilled to highlight nursing relationships all week long. why?... 🤷🏽‍♀️ because august 1-7th is @wbw_goals world breastfeeding week and the 2018 theme is 'breastfeeding: foundation of life' with objectives to inform, anchor, engage, and galvanise breastfeeding worldwide. here are more details: 🤱🏼inform people about the links between good nutrition, food security, poverty reduction and breastfeeding. 🤰🏻anchor breastfeeding as the foundation of life. 🤱🏽engage with individuals and organisations for greater impact. 🤱🏾galvanise action to advance breastfeeding as a part of good nutrition, food security and poverty reduction.
